Surprisingly, much of the zesty flavor of West Side Story shines through, thanks to choreographer Molly Alvarez's dazzling reimagining of Jerome Robbins' original choreography and the cast's singing and dancing prowess. The spoof sensibility occasionally fades to the background as the performers strut their stuff in showstopping production numbers.

Choreographed by Molly Alvarez, the colorful, lively musical numbers are highlights of a show that expertly exploits the Troubies’ specialties: commedia dell’arte horseplay, acrobatic physicality, and the ability to mine the smallest detail for comic paydirt.

Choreographer Molly Alvarez pays serious tribute to Jerome Robbins in this dance heavy musical, featuring dancers that could easily appear in a production of the Bernstein/Sondheim classic on any legit stage. And that makes all the difference.

With The First Jo-el, Director Matt Walker and Choreographer Molly Alvarez have done a masterful job of transforming the music of Billy Joel into a good-spirited and surprisingly affirmative Christmas story. Along with the uniformly excellent cast, they have found just the right balance between reverence and irreverence, chaos and coherence.

It’s a tall order trying to top last year’s wildly successful A Christmas West Side Story, which featured unparalleled production numbers (choreographed by Molly Alvarez, who also provides the great dance moves in Rudolph).
